Monday, April 10 - Vicksburg, Mississippi

Some of our stops are basically ones of convenience.  For me, Vicksburg was one of these.  Our goal was to go to New Orleans, but we had to stop and sleep and hit Mississippi, so we better find something interesting to do.  Ha!  It turned out to be more educational than I anticipated.

Our focus was the National Military Park.  We opted for a hotel for this stop.  The Airbnb's tended to be in Antebellum homes, which seem romantic and dreamy until you remember there was no air conditioning back in the day.  Nope!  The hotel we stayed in was directly across from the Military Park so it was convenient ... that was the only good thing we could say about it.

Adventure Time

USS Cairo.  The only remaining example of a City Class ironclad.

The fields throughout the Park had red and blue markers to show how close each side was to one another.  This town is on the top of bluffs with a great view to the river.  This was a hard battle to win, but this battle made it possible for the North to control the water routes.  This was one of the wealthiest towns of Mississippi, back in that time.  I had no idea.

  1. Ben *loves* ironclads! He would be thrilled to see one. I'll have to put this on his list for him.
